How Often Should You Take Your Dog On Walks?
One of the most commonly asked questions about dogs is how often one should walk them. The answer is more complicated than one might think, and there are a number of factors you’ll need to take into consideration. In this month’s blog, we’re going to break down how often you should be taking your dog on walks.
Some Factors to Consider
Each dog is unique and therefore will require different levels of exercise in order to stay healthy. Puppies and young adult dogs generally have more energy but often less endurance for long strolls. Older dogs will still greatly benefit from exercise, but if they have health concerns like arthritis they may need to go at a slower pace. It is important to consult your vet, as they will be able to tell you more about your specific dog and their needs.
Puppies
Puppies have seemingly boundless energy they’ll need to expel, for your sake and theirs. However, you’ll want to make sure your pup is fully up to date on their vaccinations before venturing into the outdoors. They’ll also need to be comfortable with their leash, so practice either inside or in the backyard before hitting the streets. The AKC recommends walking puppies for around ten minutes two to three times a day.
Adult Dogs
Adult dogs will benefit greatly from at least two fifteen-minute walks a day. This will help them keep their joints healthy and provide mental stimulation. The AKC recommends keeping track of their pace and adjusting walk duration and length accordingly.
Senior Dogs
Keeping your older dog physically and mentally active can do wonders for their health and life span. However, it is important to talk to your vet first, especially if they have any health problems. It is recommended that senior dogs take at least one ten to fifteen-minute walk a day, but more or less depending on their health.
